Oakland A’s pitcher undergoes elbow surgery days before report day

Oakland Athletics RHP Daniel Mengden has surgery on right elbow

OAKLAND, CA – JULY 16: Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Daniel Mengden (33) reacts to a solo home run by Seattle Mariners’ Omar Narvaez (22) in the second inning at the Coliseum in Oakland, Calif., on Tuesday, July 16, 2019. (Nhat V. Meyer/Bay Area News Group)

Daniel Mengden’s season began not on the Lew Wolff Training Complex field in Mesa, but under the knife in Arlington, Tex.

The Oakland A’s right-handed pitcher had successful arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow on Monday, the team announced. Dr. Keith Meister shaved off a small spur. The timetable for his return is unknown.

Mengden certainly wasn’t guaranteed a spot on the roster this season, but could have been slated to be a key arm on a pitching staff that’s looking to manage innings with Jesús Luzardo and A.J. Puk’s cautious returns.

Mengden, 26, had a 4.83 ERA in 13 games and nine starts in three stints last year with the A’s.
