The College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team climbed a spot to reach a season-high mark of No. 13 in the state, according to the California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches Association poll released Monday.

Redwoods (14-3, 1-0) downed visiting Butte College (10-7, 0-1) in its Golden Valley Conference opener on Saturday.

Drew Gillette scored 25 points and Donald Willis, 24, for Redwoods in the win. Winners of nine straight and 10 of their last 11, the Corsairs will look to stay undefeated in conference play this week as they head to Feather River (6-12, 1-1) on Thursday and Lassen (4-11, 0-1), on Saturday.

Women’s basketball

The Redwoods women’s team, after being ousted from the NorCal region top-15 in the Jan. 6 CCCWBCA poll, was ranked No. 14 in the region Monday.

Redwoods (13-3, 1-0) defeated Butte (14-5, 0-1) 79-72 on Saturday in what was the GVC opener for both teams.

Butte entered the game ranked No. 18 in the state and No. 5 in the NorCal region heading into Saturday’s game.

Redwoods will face the No. 11 team in the NorCal region, Feather River (11-7, 2-0) on Thursday and and the No. 13 team in the region, Lassen (15-4, 0-1), on Saturday.
