An exhibition of contemporary photography by members of the Redwood Camera Club is on display through Feb. 3 at The Upstairs Gallery in the Arcata Branch of Umpqua Bank. An Arts! Arcata reception is set for tonight from 6 to 9 p.m.

“For centuries artists have come together to support each other with knowledge and exhibitions. As photography — one of the newer mediums — becomes more accepted as mainstream art the importance of that support is crucial. Our club has been in existence for 34 years and long ago moved from just talking about cameras to supporting the full creative potential of all our members,” said Sharon Falk-Carlsen, president.

“This exhibit brings together work from 14 of our members in a wide range of styles and content,” she said, “from landscapes, to portraits, to abstracts. Many of these photographers have won awards for their work in exhibitions all over the country.”

Artist Stilson Snow said: “Like the artists I admire most, I try to look beneath the presenting subject to convey the deeper meaning I feel in the image.”

Diana Minton said of one her images: “It stretches my vision to go beyond just what’s in front of me. That’s what I love about photography.”
