Several rock slides occurred on state Route 96 overnight, Caltrans reported today.

“The road was closed overnight due to the slide activity” west of Happy Camp, Caltrans District 2 tweeted Friday morning.

The slide remains “active and rocks are falling down intermittently.”

Photos shared by Caltrans showed heavily damaged shipping containers, one of which appeared to have a large rock inside of it.

Around 10 a.m., Caltrans District 2 posted on Facebook that delays are likely and the road could close again at any time.

“The slide area is currently under one-way traffic control but the road can be closed at any time and without prior notice. Expect delays,” a post stated.
