College hoops roundup: ‘Jacks men hold on for win, ‘Woods women hang tough with Diablo Valley

Five Lumberjacks hit double-digit numbers scoring wise as Humboldt State men’s basketball downed visiting Pacific Union 86-80, Saturday night at Lumberjack Arena.

Leland Green led all ‘Jacks scorers with 17 points while Robert Lewis added 14 and Jackson Strong, 11. Amari Green scored 12 points off the bench for Humboldt and Isaiah Pope added 10 as a substitute.

Noah Viera got his first start of the season for the ‘Jacks and scored 9 points. Zachary Christian had 9 points in the win as well and led Humboldt with 9 rebounds.

Humboldt held a 10 point lead at the break but with 2:54 to play in the second-half, the scoreboard showed a 73-73 tie. The ‘Jacks went on an 8-0 to get ahead 81-73 with just over a minute to play and closed the game out from there.

Humboldt returns to the hard wood on Thursday for its CCAA opener against Sonoma State.

‘Woods women show well against state champs

Breesia Northern scored 18 points and the College of the Redwoods women’s basketball team fought hard against defending state champion Diablo Valley, falling 83-73 Saturday afternoon at the Sierra College Tournament in Rocklin.

Brianna Green added 16 points for Redwoods (2-2) in the loss while Ashley Quigley, who has hit double-digits scoring wise in each of Redwoods’ game this season, finished with 14.

“I thought we battled until the end of the game,” Redwoods head coach Jain Tuey said. “We competed from start to finish.”

Redwoods resumes action Friday, on the road at San Jose City College.
