The Redwood Region Audubon Society will host a program titled “Birds and Other Wildlife Down Under” Friday evening at Six Rivers Masonic Lodge, 251 Bayside Road, Arcata. The presenter is local biologist and author Ken Burton. He’ll share photos and stories from his two-month journey last year through eastern and southern Australia in search of chowchillas, logrunners, plains-wanderers and other birds with funny names. There will be kangaroos and cockatoos, too, as well as other strange creatures and stunning scenery. He also will talk about Australian biogeography and conservation challenges. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the program will begin at 7:30 p.m. Bring a mug to enjoy shade-grown coffee and come fragrance-free. Pictured is a bush thick-knee.
