An award-winning documentary, “The Age of Love,” will be shown Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Humboldt County Library, 131 Third St., Eureka. The screening is a collaboration between the library, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Humboldt State University and the Humboldt Senior Resource Center. There’s no charge to attend, and all are welcome.

According to the film press kit, “The Age of Love” (Free Play Pictures, 78 minutes) “follows the comic and poignant adventures of 30 seniors (from Rochester, New York) who attend a speed dating event for 70 to 90 year olds and discover how the search for love changes or doesn’t change from first love to the far reaches of life.” The film was written, directed and produced by Steven Loring of Brooklyn, New York, and has been shown at festivals and conferences around the world since its release in 2015.

The film screening will be followed a few weeks later by a first-of-its-kind speed dating event for adults 70 and older. It will be held Oct. 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Humboldt Senior Resource Center, 1910 California St., in Eureka.

Registration for the speed dating event will kick off at the library screening on Saturday. The speed dating event is being coordinated by Cheryl Johnson, life coach and Conscious Aging facilitator.

“We use the latest research about the aging of mind, body and spirit to explore and reflect on our life experiences, turning the challenges of aging into opportunities for growth,” Johnson said of Conscious Aging. “Topics include self-compassion, life review, forgiveness and changing stereotypes about aging in America. Recent research shows that meaningful connections are very important to fight loneliness and support healthy engagement of seniors.”

Johnson decided to coordinate a Humboldt County speed dating event after feeling her own frustrations about the local dating scene.

“At 68, I am single, hetero and frustrated — especially after a year and a half on Match.com with absolutely no positive results and having friends who also whine about dating here,” Johnson said. “When I heard about senior speed dating through Santa Cruz Senior Village, I researched it.”

She added: “I was on the board of directors of Humboldt Senior Resource Center for seven years, so I knew they would probably want to be involved, and OLLI offered to be the nonprofit organization to sign the contract with Steven Loring, while a private benefactor made the funds possible to bring the film here. … The Humboldt County Library immediately offered their screening room, promotion and social media talents so we could show it for free. I will run the discussion afterwards, and put on the speed dating event in early October.”

Johnson says she will screen registrants for the two-hour speed dating event at the Humboldt Senior Resource Center, where the women will stay seated at a table while the men move to the next table after the five-minute “date” is done.

“Each party records notes on a card about whether they would like to see that person in the future, first names only,” Johnson said. “I will compile results and when there are mutual matches of interest, I will make sure the contact info is given to both parties.”
