Singers ages 8 to 18 are being sought for the Youth Concert Chorus’ fall/winter season. Rehearsals begin today from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Coastal Grove Charter School in Arcata.
The Youth Concert Chorus — a program of the Redwood Coast Children’s Chorus, founded in 1978 by Kathe Lyth — will raise funds for the World Concert Children’s Fund to help children survivors of natural catastrophes. Both the chorus and the fund — which is an extension of the Redwood Coast Children’s Chorus — are DreamMaker projects of the Ink People Center for the Arts.
“Singing will bring help to bring in the funds to help other children. In case of a natural catastrophe, depending on where it is, those children will benefit,” Lyth said in a recent email interview.
According to the Redwood Coast Children’s Chorus website (redwoodcoastchildrenschorus.net), Lyth is a Kodaly music specialist and holds a master’s of music degree from Holy Names University in Oakland. She is a published composer and musical arranger as well as a harpist. She has more than 40 years of experience teaching the preschool through university levels.
“I thought of this concept while directing a children’s chorus in Salamanca, Spain,” Lyth said. “There was a terrible earthquake in Pakistan, and the concept of children helping children through music came to me. Put on hold for several years, it is now time to pursue this idea.”
The Youth Concert Chorus’ first concert last spring raised more than $500 for the World Concert Children’s Fund. Future concerts will do the same.
“The money we earn from concerts, etc., will have its own account solely for children survivors of natural catastrophes and for no other purpose,” Lyth said. “That is why we must have enough chorus members signed up who are committed and understand that their efforts, talents and concerts will benefit the children who need the funds.”
Donations to the World Concert Children’s Fund can also be made via the Redwood Coast Children’s Chorus website.
