Join us for live scoring updates, news and analysis from the Raiders’ last season opener in Oakland when they take on the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football, beginning at 7:20 p.m.
This marks the second straight season where the Raiders go into their opener reeling from the loss of an All-Pro player. Last year it was the Khalil Mack trade that rocked Raider Nation, this time it was Antonio Brown’s stunning release following a summer filled with drama.
The Raiders will try to snap Denver’s NFL-best seven-game winning streak in openers and will need Derek Carr and the offense to be successful against the Broncos’ tough defense, led by edge rushers Von Miller and Bradley Chubb. Oakland’s patched-up offensive line — guards Jordan Devey and Denzelle Good are filling in for Gabe Jackson and Richie Incognito — will need to provide Carr with better protection than last year when he was sacked a career-worst 51 times.
The new-look Raiders will feature three first-round picks who’ll play plenty Monday in defensive end Clelil Ferrell, running back Josh Jacobs and safety Johnathan Abram.
The Broncos will offer a lot of new looks as well after changing head coaches and quarterbacks. Former 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, 61, officially begins his first head-coaching job tonight. Ex-Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco takes over for the departed Case Keenum and will lean on receiver Emmanuel Sanders and Pro Bowl halfback Phillip Lindsay.
The Raiders will be back in action next Sunday at home against the defending AFC West champion Chiefs, who’ll be without star receiver Tyreek Hill (shoulder).
