“Us and Them” is a new art show that will feature works of four local plein air artists and four plein air painters from San Diego. The exhibit will be on view starting Aug. 31 at the Matt Bear Art Gallery inside Eureka and Frame Co., 1636 F St., Eureka.

The local artists — “us” — are Jim McVicker, Ken Jarvela, Steve Taylor and Matt Beard. The visiting artists — “them” — are Norm Daniels, Wade Koniakowsky, Jeff Yeomans and Greg Gorgas.

Beard — who invited the group of visiting artists to Humboldt County — has worked with the four many times over the last several years during visits to that area. The four San Diego painters will be joining with the four local painters to paint scenes of the Trinidad coast from Aug. 28 to 30.

After three busy days of painting, the finished works will be hung at Beard’s gallery, providing viewers a chance to see the coast through the fresh perspectives the visiting artists bring, as well as all new works from seasoned locals who’ve spent decades exploring this coast.

A reception will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 31. There is no cost to attend and snacks and light beverages will be provided. The visiting artists leave town the next morning, so don’t miss this chance to see their work, connect in person and hear what they thought of their brief visit to Humboldt. (Collectors may contact Matt Beard about previewing the work prior to the opening reception at 707-440-9375.)

Want to paint?

All are welcome to observe and/or join in the painting sessions, though no schedule will be announced — just look for five to eight painters clustered along the coast between Moonstone Beach and Patrick’s Point on any given day from Aug. 28 to 30. While not required, it is strongly suggested that artists who wish to drop in should bring doughnuts and/or coffee in the mornings and cold beer in the afternoons.
