Open mic

Westhaven: The Westhaven Center for the Arts, at 501 S. Westhaven Drive just south of Trinidad, will present “Third Friday Summer Open-Mic” Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. The event is being hosted by Writer-in-Residence Bryan Radzin. Marsh tour

Arcata: Friends of the Arcata Marsh is sponsoring a free tour of the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday at 2 p.m. Meet leader Lynn Jones at the Interpretive Center on South G Street for a two-hour walk focusing on the ecology of the marsh. Loaner binoculars are available with a photo ID. For more information, call 707-826-2359.

Yard sale

Blue Lake: The “Blue Lake City Wide Yard Sale” will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Maps will be available at the Companion Animal Foundation Thrift Store, 410 Railroad Ave. in Blue Lake that day. If any Blue Lakers want to be on the map, they can sign up at the thrift store. The fee is $5 to be on the map. Proceeds go to CAF. For more information, call Adelene Jones at 707-668-5567.

Tour the marsh

Arcata: the Redwood Region Audubon Society is sponsoring a free public field trip at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday. Bring binoculars for birding and meet leader Jude Power in the parking lot at the end of South I Street (Klopp Lake) in Arcata at 8:30 a.m., rain or shine. The trip ends around 11 a.m.

Read to a dog

Trinidad: A “Read to a Dog” program is set for Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Trinidad Library, 380 Janis Court. Kids can drop in between 1 and 3 p.m. for an opportunity to read to Katie, the dog. Kids have fun and build confidence as they read to a four-footed friend. There is no cost to participate. For more information, call 707-677-0227.

Get eBooks

Eureka: “Get to Know Libby” and get free eBooks and audiobooks. A program to learn how to sign up for Libby is slated for Saturday from noon to 1 p.m. at the Eureka Library, 1313 Third St. Bring your smartphone or tablet and your library card. Library staff will walk everyone through how to download the Libby app, how to set up an account and how to get started downloading free eBooks and audiobooks. There is no charge to attend. Virtual adventure

McKinleyville: The McKinleyville Library, 1606 Pickett Road, will offer people the chance to use Oculus Rift virtual reality equipment and choose and adventure Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. The McKinleyville Library is part of the California Virtual Reality Experience, a join program of the California State Library and CALIFA to bring this technology to towns across the state. These virtual reality adventures are recommended for those 13 and older. There is no charge to participate. For more information, call 707-839-4459.

Pancakes here

Fortuna: Knights of Columbus Redwood Council 3103 invites everyone to a pancake breakfast Sunday at the Parish Activity Center on Newburg Road from 9 a.m. to noon. The menu includes pancakes, eggs, ham or bacon, juice and coffee. The special is Eggs Benedict. Proceeds go to local charities, scholarships and parish needs.
