Cancer support

Eureka: The Cancer Support Group will meet on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop, 2942 F St. Meetings are open to everyone, and are free with refreshments provided. For more information, contact Peggy at 707-443-9522.

Friendship Circle

Eureka: The Friendship Circle dance takes place every Tuesday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Humboldt Grange Hall, 5845 Humboldt Hill Road. Admission is $5. Coffee and snacks are provided (you can bring your own drinks). Everyone is welcome. Live music will be provided.

Retirees meet

Arcata: The National Active and Retired Federal Employees, Chapter 608, will meet on Tuesday at the Oriental Buffet in the Valley West Shopping Center. There will be another round of conversation and updates on administration actions that affect all government workers. The meeting begins at noon, and will be preceded by lunch and socializing. This month’s speaker will be Teresa Oliveri from the Humboldt Senior Resource Center. She will be discussing Alzheimer’s and related dementia. Contact Pete at 707-839-0169 for more information.

Poetry reading

Bayside: A poetry reading by Pat McCutcheon will take place Friday at 6 p.m. at Bayside Books in the Sunny Brae Center. She will be reading new poems from “Stonewall’s Legacy” and other anthologies, including her work, and she will read older poems by request.

Voter event

Eureka: The Humboldt County Republican Party will hold a community voter education forum with Mark Meuser, election law specialist and a 2017 candidate for California Secretary of State, at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 27, in Room 110 of the Humanities Building at College of the Redwoods. Coffee, tea and dessert will be provided.

Mensa meets

Samoa: “No one is coming to save us: Why you should demand more from your local newspaper” is the topic of a presentation by Marc Valles, managing editor of the Times-Standard in Eureka. It will be held at a Northcoast Mensa forum at noon Saturday, July 27, at the Samoa Cookhouse. The forum is open to the public and is held eight times a year. The presentation is followed by time for questions. Lunch is no-host.

Valles has been editor since 2016 after working at newspapers in several California cities, including San Francisco, San Bernardino and Palm Springs. He also worked on the Bay Area Newspaper Group copy desk, which edited stories for four daily papers. He attended UC Santa Barbara and lives outside Eureka with his wife, Kristi. On aquafarming

Eureka: “Aquafarming for Humboldt Bay” will be the topic at the Humboldt Bay Harbor Working Group monthly luncheon on July 31. The luncheon is a no-host event. Lunch starts being served at noon and the presentation starts around 12:30 p.m. Roast beef will be served for lunch at $16 and soup and salad is available for $12. Garden Gala

Eureka: The Humboldt Botanical Garden will hold its “Garden Gala” Sept. 7 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the garden at College of the Redwoods, 7707 Tompkins Hills Road, Exit 698. This event includes local food, local wine and beer, music, children’s activities, plein air artists and an auction. Pre-sale tickets are $40 for members and $50 for non-members, or at the gate, $50 and $60. Kids 12 and under are free and those under 21 are half price. Tickets are available at the HBG, George Petersen Insurance in Eureka, www.hbgf.org or at the gate on the day of the event.
