Caleb Ruiz (Jose Quezada — For the Times-Standard)

Humboldt Eagles 19-U pitcher Caleb Ruiz started Wednesday’s game against the Humboldt B52s and did not disappoint. The recent St. Bernard’s graduate on his way to College of the Redwoods pitched 7.2 innings and earned the win in a 5-4 victory over the B52s, at Bomber Field.

Ruiz gave up two earned runs on eight hits while striking out four. C.J. Van Meter and Kalebh Hill closed out the final 1.1 innings for the Eagles. Van Meter didn’t give up a hit in his 0.2 innings of work while Hill gave up just one hit and struck out two en route to the save.

Offensively for the Eagles, Gannon Cyphers showed well with three hits and a pair of RBIs. Scott Coffelt also made his mark at the plate with one hit and two runs driven in. Jaden Gorge and Dustin Ireland each also had two hits a piece for the Eagles.

For the B52s, Jacob Smith and Eric Smelko each had two hits in the loss. Ryan Rivera (2-2) started at pitcher for the B52s and lasted six innings, giving up four earned runs on seven hits in the loss.

With Wednesday’s win the Eagles are now 2-2 against the B52s on the summer.

The Eagles (4-0, 28-9) and B52s (17-9) both return to action on Friday. The Eagles will head to Fairfield for a pair of games while the B52s will open up a three-game series at home against NBO Baseball.
