Sign-ups for the annual summer reading program begin at public libraries in Humboldt County on Saturday, or even sooner at some libraries holding their kick-off parties before then. This year’s theme is “It’s Showtime @ Your Library!”

Libraries are celebrating the summer with special events featuring puppetry, magic, circus skills, storytelling, and music, presented by local favorites such as Quack and Wabbit, Sean Powers, Dale Lorzo, Circus Nature, the Humboldt Juggling Society, Ali Freedlund and Bandemonium. Additional ongoing library programs invite participants to help create their own shows with music, puppetry, and art. Visit humlib.org and check the calendar and branch library pages for further information on all events.

Children, teens and adults are invited to sign up as a summer reading participant at any branch of the library. Children and teens can win paperback books or other prizes for finishing the reading challenge they sign up for. To make checking out library books easier, children under the age of 9 are eligible for a waiver of overdue fines and a free replacement library card through June 30. Other children in the same household are also eligible — visit any Humboldt County Library to learn more about this special fine waiver funded by First 5 Humboldt and the Department of Health and Human Services.
