The annual Charles Lakin Humboldt-Del Norte League Tournament kicks off on Tuesday and Big 5 Conference dual-champions, McKinleyville High, holds No. 1 seeds for both baseball and softball while St. Bernard’s and Hoopa will enter the tournament as No. 1 seeds from the Little 4 Conference for baseball and softball, respectively.
The softball portion of the tournament will be played at the Arcata Community Fields by Healthsport while the baseball games will be held at the Arcata Ball Park.
Round one, Tuesday
Four opening-round games, two a piece for softball and baseball, will be played on Tuesday. For baseball, the No. 2 seed from the Little 4, South Fork (13-5), will take on Arcata (19-5), the No. 3 seed from the Big 5, at 4 p.m. In the other first-round game the No. 2 Big 5 team, Eureka (13-6), will clash with the No. 3 Little four team, Ferndale (10-10), at 7 p.m.
Both baseball games will be the first meetings between the teams this season.
Over in softball, St. Bernard’s (9-8), the No. 2 seed from the Little 4, will take on the Big 5’s No. 3 team, Arcata (15-8), at 5 p.m. In the night cap Eureka (17-5), the No. 2 seed from the Big 5, will take on South Fork (11-8) at 7 p.m.
Arcata beat St. Bernard’s twice, 4-3 and 12-7, back in mid-March at a preseason tournament. Eureka has not faced South Fork yet this season.
The tournament’s semifinal games will be held on Thursday. For baseball, the Big 5’s No. 1 seed, McKinleyville (19-2), will play the winner of the South Fork/Arcata matchup at 4 p.m. while the Little 4’s No. 1 seed, St. Bernard’s (16-8), will take on the winner of the Eureka/Ferndale game at 7 p.m..
McKinleyville hasn’t faced South Fork in 2019 and went 2-1 against Eureka during the regular season series between the two teams.
St. Bernard’s went 3-1 against Ferndale during the season and lost its one-off game against Eureka back in early April.
McKinleyville (18-3), also the Big 5’s No. 1 seed for softball, will battle the winner of the St. Bernard’s/Arcata game at 5 p.m. while the No. 1 seed from the Little 4, Hoopa (13-7) will face the winner of the Eureka/South Fork game at 7 p.m.
McKinleyville beat St. Bernard’s 11-1 when they met in March in a preseason tournament game and won its regular season series against Eureka two games to one.
The tournament championship games for both baseball and softball will be played on Friday. The softball championship will be played at 5 p.m. and baseball, at 7 p.m.
