For more than 20 years, the Fortuna Family Resource Center has been ensuring the health and safety of children and adults in the Eel River Valley. Resource Center Director Kay Chapman said “we really focus on mental health at our site.”
The Resource Center is located in a double-wide modular on the campus of South Fortuna Elementary School and is one of 17 such centers in Humboldt County. It includes two therapy play rooms offering services for students not only at South School, but the other three schools in the Fortuna Elementary School District as well. Seven therapists rotate through the Resource Center each week.
Services offered at the Fortuna Family Resource Center include assistance with CalFresh, transportation, case management, help with completing job applications and employment, information on community events for children and families, and information for homeless families.
The center also provides food backpacks for kids, with help from the local Rotary Clubs and Americorps volunteers.
“Rotary is our jewel and donates a huge amount of money,” Chapman said, “and comes every week to pack the backpacks for the kids to take home on Fridays.”
Many other donors were also mentioned including St Joseph Health Humboldt, the Episcopal and Methodist Churches, Knights of Columbus, Hops in Humboldt, and Youth Engaged in Philanthropy.
There are a number of ways the community can support and assist the Fortuna Family Resource Center in providing services to local families. Hygiene supplies are always in need, as well as simple, healthy snacks, money for the food backpacks and laundry vouchers, as well as gift cards for buying food and groceries.
The Fortuna Family Resource Center is located at 2089 Newburg Road, on the South Fortuna Elementary School campus. House are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The telephone number is 707-725-9082.
