Springtime was in full bloom Sunday at the Fortuna River Lodge and Conference Center for the 44th Annual Fortuna Garden Club Daffodil Show. There was a total of 85 entries in the show, 35 in the youth category and 50 in the adult category. Winners ranged in age from four to over 90.
“Some of our winners were first-timers and others seasoned growers and competitors,” said show chair Maria Krenek. “Everyone, though, loves daffodils.”
Four-year-old Adeline Kleiner of Fortuna won first place in the preschool to third-grade class. The Youth People’s Choice award was given to Alaya Abeyta of Fortuna High School. In the adult category, Carol Kinser won the Batty Allison award, Pat Chaney won the Kathy Leonardi trophy, Terri Emmons won the Sequoia Gas Company trophy and a creativity ribbon for best design, Donna Ferris won the award for best petite arrangement, and the Adult People’s Choice trophy was won by Katelynn Watton.
“The (show) is a great example of a community coming together. We are proud of our community participation,” Krenek said, “and especially proud and thrilled by the participation of the younger members of our community whether entering stems for competition and flower arrangements or crafts at the crafts table.”
She also expressed her appreciation for participation from Fortuna Garden Club members, merchants, the California Conservation Corps, the Fortuna Art Council, the Fortuna Camera Club, Humboldt Harpists, the City of Fortuna and the Fortuna River Lodge and Conference Center.
