The St. Bernard’s baseball team had no issue scoring runs on Friday, getting up on Colusa 9-0 before rain forced an early end to the ACA Tournament quarterfinal game in Redding after three innings.
With Friday’s win St. Bernard’s advances to today’s championship round where it will face University Prep at 1:40 p.m. in the semifinals and, with a win, would face the winner of Arcata versus Lassen in the championship game at 4 p.m.
Caleb Ruiz pitched the entirety of Friday’s shortened game, delivering a complete-game shutout. At the plate the senior went 2-for-2 with 3RBIs. Nick Dugan went 2-for-2 and scored twice, adding to what has been a breakout weekend for the freshman.
Dugan pitched a complete game in St. Bernard’s 8-3 win over Gridley on Thursday, throwing 14 strikeouts while allowing seven hits in the process. At the plate the freshman went 1-for-3 with double and 2RBIs.
“(Dugan) is playing well ahead of his age,” St. Bernard’s head coach Matt Tomlin said in a text to the Times-Standard following Friday’s game. “On the mound he has explosive strikeout stuff and the composure of an upper-classman. At the plate he is putting good swings on the ball. He also fills a lot of holes defensively in the infield and outfield.”
Lane Thrap, who went 1-for-2 with 2RBIs in Friday’s win, led St. Bernard’s to its 9-5 tournament-opening win over Willows on Thursday. Thrap pitched a complete game in the win over Willlows, striking out six and allowing seven hits.
Bode Joyner has also had a productive weekend so far for St. Bernard’s. The sophomore has gone for six hits, 6RBIs, two doubles and a home run through three games at the tournament.
St. Bernard’s (7-1) will face a University Prep (7-8) team which enters today’s game coming off a 10-5 win over Ferndale on Friday.
