A sure sign that spring is here is the 44th annual Daffodil Show, taking place this weekend in Fortuna. This bursting-with-flowers event will take place Saturday and Sunday at the Fortuna River Lodge and Conference Center. This year’s theme is “Daffodil Joy” and while the local show is presented by the Fortuna Garden Club, the motif is picked by the Northern California Daffodil Society.
The Fortuna show is the largest in the Golden State and is an official Northern California Daffodil Society event.
According to the Fortuna Garden Club, many generations of families have submitted entries and attended the show since the first year in 1975.
“For over 40 years, Fortuna Garden Club has been presenting free to our community one of the most beautiful flower shows on the North Coast,” said Karen Hall, club president. “Come enjoy the beautiful display of daffodils (along with) free refreshments, potted daffodils for sale, art and music. We guarantee you won’t be disappointed.”
Trophies and ribbons are awarded in many of the 13 divisions and 200 classes of daffodils based off of specific rules and regulations by which all entrants must abide, according to the Northern California Daffodil Society. Judges for this annual event come from all over California — this year’s from Red Bluff.
Entries are still being accepted. Contact Daffodil Joy show chair Maria Krenek at 707-443-9472 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you are entering stems or designs, you are asked to bring them to the Fortuna River Lodge and Conference Center by 10 p.m. Friday or between 7 and 10 a.m. Saturday. There is no entry fee, and judging will start at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Attendees will also have an opportunity to purchase potted daffodils. Earlier this year, the Fortuna Garden Club planted 350 pots of daffodils, which will be available for sale.
The show will also feature local art on display, a children’s activities table and a photo booth. The Humboldt Harpists will provide live music on Saturday.
