Despite all the publicity and discussion generated by the scandal involving admission to elite universities, there seems to be a deeper issue which is being ignored.

Coaches at the elite universities were allegedly bribed by wealthy parents to allow their children admission by constructing fake athletic profiles.

The deeper issue is that everyone unquestionably accepts the system which allows athletes to attend elite universities, even if the athletes do not meet the admission standards for other students.

If these universities are “institutions of higher learning” seeking the brightest and most accomplished students, why admit athletes who do not meet admission standards?

The NCAA always refers to “student athletes” but apparently some individuals are athletes first, and students second.
