Onawa Gutierrez, head coach of the Arcata High boys tennis team, said it is her team’s goal to finish their season undefeated for a third consecutive year.
Two matches in to their 2019 campaign, the Tigers are right on track.
Arcata logged a pair of flawless victories to begin its season, beating St. Bernard’s in its season opener on Friday 7-0 and Eureka by the same score on Saturday.
On Friday Arcata will face the only other team in the Humboldt-Del Norte League which has had any modicum of success against it over the past few years — Northcoast Preparatory Academy.
NPA, in fact, was the only team to beat Arcata in a single head-to-head matchup last season. It was the season opener for both teams and although Arcata as a team went on to win the match 6-1, NPA could feel good about denting an otherwise completely perfect Tigers season which saw the team finish the regular season 14-0 with 13 shutout wins.
Dating back to the beginning of the 2017 season Arcata has won 29 consecutive regular season matches and two straight outright league titles. The team’s last loss came at the end of the 2016 season to — you guessed it — NPA.
“It should be one of our most competitive matches of the season,” Gutierrez said about today’s match.
Single matches will begin first at 3 p.m. on Friday at the Arcata High tennis courts followed by doubles.
