George Navarro scored 17 of his 28 points in the second half amidst a comeback attempt that fell short as the Hoopa boys basketball team lost 62-51 to Del Norte in the semifinal round of the Dick Niclai Memorial Tournament, Thursday night at Hoopa High.
With the win Del Norte (15-7) moves on to tonight’s Niclai championship game against the Fortuna Huskies (25-1), a matchup which has seen the Huskies come out on top twice this season.
Thursday night, Del Norte put Hoopa in a hole early and led 39-18 at halftime.
Omar Banuelos scored 12 of his team-high 17 points for Del Norte in the first half.
Hoopa steadily climbed back in the second half, outscoring Del Norte in both the third and fourth quarters but it was a surge which came too late as the Warriors were able to run the clock on offense keep the home team from ever getting too close.
Wade Nixon shot the ball well Thursday night despite the loss, finishing with 14 points and four 3-pointers.
