Kaylea Sanchez scored 13 of her game-high 24 points in the third quarter and the Del Norte Warriors handed the McKinleyville Panthers its second Big 5 Conference loss of the season, 48-42 Friday night at McKinleyville High.
The Panthers took a 19-17 lead into halftime but could not keep Sanchez and the Warriors contained in the second half as the visitors poured in 20 points alone in the third quarter to take a lead which they would not give up until the final buzzer.
Friday’s win keep the Warriors (3-0, 14-1) atop the Big 5 standings along with the Eureka Loggers (3-0, 13-5). With Friday’s loss, the Panthers (1-2, 10-9) fall back into a third-place tie with the Fortuna Huskies (1-2, 11-8) which beat Arcata (0-4, 7-11) Friday night as well.
Cameron Heenan lead the Panthers in scoring in the loss with 14 points, Rian Heenan added eight more and Rayn Tripp, six.
The Panthers will take a few days off before returning to action on Wednesday with an away game against the Fortuna Huskies while the Warriors will lace up once again today for a home game against South Medford.
