Arcata suffered its first league loss of the season as the Del Norte Warriors tamed the Tigers 54-52 Tuesday night at Arcata High.

With Tuesday’s loss the Tigers (2-1, 8-10) risk falling a game back of Fortuna (2-0, 17-1) , which plays its next Big 5 Conference game on Thursday. For the Warriors (1-1, 10-4), Tuesday’s win moves them out of the bottom of the Big 5 as they must now play catch up if they are to climb back to the top of the conference before the end of the season.

The Warriors were able to take advantage of the Tigers’ miscues in their man-to-man defense, allowing for an assault of threes in the second half that Arcata couldn’t stop.

“Tonight I didn’t do a very good job of putting us in the right situations,” Arcata head coach Dusty Schofield said.

The Tigers had trouble stopping Del Norte’s point guard Omar Banuelos all night as the guard lead all scorers with 31 points. Banuelos hit five 3-pointers in the win, including three in the second half to hold off the Tigers, who trailed 30-26 at the break and 43-39 entering the fourth quarter.

“Their threes in the second half gave us problems, we couldn’t make our rotations in our zone,” Arcata’s junior guard Garrett Hall said.

The Tigers will look to get back to the gym and recalibrate as they look to right the ship after a tough loss.

Hall lead Arcata with 15 points and Hunter Santsche chipped in 12 in the loss.

The Tigers will have a chance to get back in the win column on Thursday when they travel to the Friendly City to take on Fortuna (2-0, 17-1) for a match up which will go a long way towards deciding the eventual league champ. Del Norte will get chance at securing league win number two on Thursday when they host McKinleyville (0-2, 7-9).
