A man found shot in the head early this morning on state Route 36 near Dinsmore was pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The 47-year-old man was found in a truck that showed “damage consistent with a traffic collision,” a news release stated. The vehicle was found near mile marker 43 on state Route 36.

The incident was first reported just before 3 a.m. today.

Sheriff William Honsal the sheriff’s office is following up on several leads and is speaking with witnesses. He said the incident is being investigated as a homicide.

“We don’t have any suspect at this time,” Honsal said this afternoon.

He said there were two vehicles associated with the incident and that the sheriff’s office is working with the California Highway Patrol and the county district attorney’s office on the case.

Honsal declined to state whether the victim was a Humboldt County resident, and said the identity of the victim would be released after next of kin is notified.

“We should ID the victim later (today or Saturday),” Honsal said.
