St. Bernard’s quarterback Will Omey was selected as a finalist for the MaxPreps/USA Football “Players of the Week” award, MaxPreps announced on Tuesday.
The award is given weekly to eight high school football players representing eight different regions across the nation. Omey, because of his seven touchdown performance against San Marin in a 49-47 loss last Saturday, Nov. 24, was one of five players from the West Region to be selected as finalists for the award for the week of Nov. 19-25.
Omey finished Saturday’s North Coast Section Division-IV quarterfinal playoff loss 19-30 passing for 270 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, and also rushed for 260 yards and five touchdowns off of 43 carries — that’s seven total touchdowns and 530 total yards of offense.
Saturday’s seven touchdown performance wasn’t even the highest of Omey’s 2018 season. Omey delivered a season-high eight total touchdowns, seven through the air and one on the ground, in a 56-64 overtime win on the road against Fortuna High back on Oct. 19.
Omey, currently a junior, had previously not started at varsity quarterback for the Crusaders prior to the 2018 season. In his first year under center Omey put together a gaudy 50 touchdown year, including 31 touchdowns and 2271 yards through the air and 19 touchdowns and 1413 yards on the ground.
“Where (Will Omey) went we went this year,” St. Bernard’s head coach Matt Tomlin said following Saturday’s loss. “He was simply brilliant this year.”
MaxPreps will announce this week’s winners sometime today.
