NBC Sports Regional Networks today announced the hiring of Matt Murphy as senior vice president and general manager of NBC Sports Bay Area & California, effective Jan. 2.
Murphy, a native of Connecticut, will be responsible for the network, its multi-platform content and the relationships it has, as rights holder, with the San Francisco Giants, Golden State Warriors, Oakland A’s, Sacramento Kings, and San Jose Sharks.
The announcement was made by Bill Bridgen, President, Group Leader, NBC Sports Regional Networks, to whom Murphy will report.
“As we continue to put fans first and strive to serve them with the most engaging content across all platforms, it became clear that Matt’s expertise and leadership in this space made him the ideal candidate to take these networks to the next level,” said Bridgen.
Previously, Murphy served as Senior Vice President, Platforms and Strategy for NBC Sports Regional Networks. He was responsible for the digital platform strategy for the RSNs, product development, and revenue growth from advertising, direct-to-consumer services and partnerships. Most recently, Murphy was instrumental in the launch of the MyTeams sports app.
Murphy is a 20-year sales and marketing veteran from Disney and ESPN Media Networks. Most recently, he served as SVP of Digital Video Distribution, and led a national sales and marketing team for distribution strategies across all non-linear platforms, including YouTube, Xbox and Netflix.
He replacesTom Stathakes, who left NBCSBA/CA during the summer.
Murphy graduated from Washington and Lee University with a bachelor’s degree in European history. He and his wife have three children.
