Recent discussions about the return of our rail system is one that needs to be put back into place. Sure it will cost money to do so but the investment is a no-brainer when it comes to our economy in the long term. Our gas prices are the highest in the nation right here in Humboldt County. Dredging the bay has not begun like we were told it would to allow larger vessels in with cargo, so we depend on everything being trucked in. This is not feasible at all to say the least; worldwide trade could be and should be happening. Uncertainty is always a scary event when it concerns a community. We have been at a standstill now for far too long; with logging, fishing and railway taken from us, how are we supposed to grow with the rest of the world if we do not try to better our situation? Anyone doubting railroads help the economy needs to take a trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma for a day and watch how the eight tracks they operate each and every day help with the cost of living. … So yes, we do need the rail line! As a matter of fact, instead of the city of Eureka putting any more money into that trail that we absolutely had to have between Eureka and Arcata, they put the remainder into something that will actually benefit the entire county for years to come.
