Who says Jimmy Garoppolo can do no wrong? Certainly not former 49ers general manager Scot McCloughan, who ripped into the injured 49ers quarterback Monday night.

McCloughan seemed bothered after ESPN’s cameras showed Garoppolo sitting in a Levi’s Stadium suite during the 49ers’ 27-23 loss to the Giants. Taking to Twitter, McCloughan wondered why Garoppolo wasn’t down on the field supporting his teammates.

Of course, there’s a perfect explanation why Jimmy G, who underwent knee surgery five weeks ago, was safely seated high above the action, as our Cam Inman and others pointed out.

But the man who helped run the 49ers from 2005-10 wasn’t buying that explanation.

McCloughan then tried backing up his criticism of Garoppolo by posting a picture of Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, who had also torn his ACL, standing on the sidelines while using a crutch last season against the Raiders.

Twitter sleuths quickly destroyed McCloughan’s argument by showing Wentz was on the sideline before the game but sitting in a Coliseum luxury box while the Eagles battled Oakland last Christmas.

If McCloughan had done a little homework of his own, he would have known 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan won’t allow Garoppolo anywhere near the field during games or even practices.

Two weeks ago, Shanahan dismissed the possibility that Garoppolo was even close to being able to stand with his teammates on game day.

“No, not yet, or out on the practice field,” Shanahan said. “Just being on the crutches and stuff, if something bad happened he couldn’t protect himself. So, we’ve got to keep him off of football areas. But, he’s going around on his crutches in the building. So, he’s at the meetings and things like that. But, nothing on the field.”

Maybe when Garoppolo is given clearance to be on the field, someone would be kind enough to give McCloughan a head’s up?
