Every third Sunday the Humboldt Unitarian Universalist Fellowship donates the entire offering basket and funds raised from a Social Action Committee brunch to a local nonprofit organization.
“The congregation has made this commitment to local community needs based on their principles and purpose to support and engage in justice and neighbors in need for the last five years,” said the Rev. Bryan Jessup of the fellowship.
“The purpose is to recognize local organizations that need to know HUUF is supportive of their work and to engage the congregation so people know of the important work of these organizations,” he said. “The SAC offering and brunch is an opportunity for the congregation to consider their engagement with others doing justice.”
Each year, the Social Action Committee chooses 12 organizations that the congregation needs to know more about and that need to know that the fellowship’s congregation supports their work.
The committee contacts the organizations and asks them to attend services on the third Sunday and briefly tell the congregation about their work. The Social Action Committee solicits brunch donations from the congregation and serves brunch after services for $5. The offering and brunch collection goes entirely to the organization.
In 2018, donations totaled over $7,000, went to Planned Parenthood, the Breast and GYN Health Project, Food for People, the Rape Crisis Team, Humboldt Domestic Violence Services, Affordable Homeless Housing Alternatives, Humboldt Edge, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Eureka Boys and Girls Club, Circulo de Amigos, Betty Chinn and Arcata House Partnership.
