SANTA CLARA — Parlay Thursday’s rout of the Raiders with the Los Angeles Rams’ first loss Sunday and, voila, the 49ers (2-7) gained a game in the NFC West standings for the first time this season. Now they’re only, uh, six back with seven to go.
So how did the 49ers spend their weekend off? Players scattered to Las Vegas, Napa, Carmel and to a post-Halloween costume party. Here is the mail that’s piled up for them as they return to work and prepare for Monday night’s game against the New York Giants:
If Nick Mullen’s keeps up his success and say, he gets us to 5-6 wins this year, do you see us releasing CJ this offseason ? (@Kozmiccc)
What I’d expect is an intense battle next offseason for the No. 2 quarterback spot, all while Jimmy Garoppolo gets back to full health, which in itself is why the 49ers should keep all three at least through camp. Mullens and Beathard will have ample film in case a team comes calling in a trade, but releasing one is unlikely.
IF Jimmy is off crutches by Monday night, would you expect to see him on the sidelines vs NY? (@4GenSFFanFam)
Why dare allow your franchise QB (apologies to Mr. Mullens) on the sideline only a month after knee reconstruction? With or without crutches, he’d be in harm’s way, while coaches can school up Mullens. Garoppolo had surgery Oct. 3, and he’s hated being on crutches. It took Jerick McKinnon six weeks ditch his crutches. Just be happy to see them both on the field in 2019, not Monday night.
I’m assuming with Mostert out for the year that we will be making a roster move for another RB. What are our options? (@49erFanZakAttak)
Jeff Wilson Jr. or Matt Dayes could bet summoned from the practice squad, and Wilson is the quicker option who’s more familiar with the offense. The 49ers also could audition free agents, as Kyle Shanahan indicated last week. What they need best is someone who can chip in if needed as a rusher but also prove helpful on special teams.
Of the potential edge rushers that could hit the free agent market in 2019, who is likeliest to hit the market and who’d be the best fit for the 49ers? (@Panikkar37)
Demarcus Lawrence (Dallas Cowboys) and Ezekiel Ansah (Detroit Lions) are playing on franchise tags, and Ansah is more likely to hit the market. Sidelined all but 31 snaps this season by a shoulder injury, Ansah was a 2013 first-round pick of Martin Mayhew (then Lions GM, current 49ers exec) . Other potential free agents: Dee Ford, Jadeveon Clowney, Anthony Barr, Markus Golden, Frank Clark, Shaquil Barrett, Dante Fowler and many more.
You folks all hyped Jimmy G now it is time to hype Nick . Please stop (@kamgharana)
Mullens’ mania has only just begun. You may want to mimic Mullens and put on some headphones with fake crowd noise if you don’t want to hear what awaits the next seven games.
(Bonus note: This might be the first mailbag all season that didn’t address if defensive coordinator Robert Saleh is on the hot seat. Amazing what an eight-sack, no-touchdowns-allowed win can do.)
