Tony Thurmond is running for state superintendent of public instruction.

The Great Recession hit California schools hard — larger class sizes, teacher layoffs, and program cuts to arts, sports, technology, vocational classes, and the like.

Voter-approved funding initiatives, state and local, have started to turn things around. California needs to keep moving forward in support of its schools. Tony Thurmond will keep us going in the right direction.

Tony Thurmond’s track record in the Legislature is one of support for public school students and educators. He has voted in favor of school funding, supports local control and accountability, argued to shift funding from private prisons to school programs, favors universal preschool and affordable access to college for the middle class, and is solidly in defense of vocational, science and technology and rigorous academic courses.

I urge voters to join me in voting for Tony Thurmond for superintendent of public instruction on Nov. 6. The office is nonpartisan, but is importance to the future of our schoolchildren is immense.
