Before I met Sofia four years ago, I had never really been that interested in politics. Of course I always voted and kept up on the issues, but I never really imagined that I would become friends with a politician. Meeting Sofia at a fundraiser organized by a friend, I found it easy to imagine Sofia’s involvement with the Arcata City Council. She was open and easy to talk to, and receptive to new ideas. Sofia asked me to help spread the word about her plans if elected to the City Council door to door in my neighborhood. I had never knocked on an unknown neighbors’ door and asked them to vote for anyone, but I did it for Sofia. She prepped me with her plans to make Arcata a Zero Waste City, get rid of plastic bags, make safer streets, and organize lots of fun community events. Most people I spoke to were already planning on voting for her, and the ones who didn’t know about her promised to. Promoting a young, educated, successful woman for a position on the city council was easy. After winning the election by a landslide, Sofia went on to keep all her promises. Her tenure has brought its fair share of challenges, but through it all she has remained an unwaveringly dedicated and caring public servant. A vote for Sofia is a vote for someone who has brought a breath of fresh air to our little postcard town. Thanks for your consideration.
