The St. Bernard’s volleyball team will try to advance to the North Coast Section championship round of the Division VI playoffs when it hosts Calistoga today at 7 p.m.
The No. 4 seeded Crusaders (9-12) advanced to today’s semifinal match after a 3-1 win at home over visiting No. 5 Emery (8-14) last Saturday night, Oct. 27. No. 8 Calistoga (11-9) upset the tournament No. 1 seed, Fremont Christian, with a 3-1 last Saturday as well. St. Bernard’s is the highest remaining seed of the four remaining teams left as upset victories have been the norm through the first two rounds of the NCS tournament. If the Crusaders win tonight, they will face the winner of No. 10 Jewish Community School at No. 6 Tomales.
St. Bernard’s head coach Wendy Joyner said her team is a closely knit bunch comprised of girls who feed off of each others energy. She said her team captains, seniors Sarah Regli, Alyssa Liles and Emily Gardner, are her most experienced players and will be depended on in order for the Crusaders to get a win tonight.
“We have quite a few leaders besides our captains, though,” Joyner said. “I’m lucky enough to have girls who are friends off the court and who get along really well.”
St. Bernard’s ran the table during regular season Little 7 Conference play, finishing with a perfect 8-0 record in league and an outright Little 4 championship.
“I want us to come out with a lot of confidence tonight,” Joyner said. “I want them to know that they can get another win tonight, we’ve prepared well and practiced hard, and we are ready to play.”
