Two local boys soccer teams will begin their pursuit of of a Division I North Coast Section championship as both Eureka and Arcata have first round playoff matches tonight.

The No. 10 seeded Loggers (9-7-2) will face No. 7 Cloverdale (12-5-4), in Cloverdale, tonight at 7 p.m. while No. 8 Arcata (10-5-3) will host No. 9 Willits (10-7-2) at McKinleyville High’s soccer field at 7 p.m. tonight as well.

Arcata finished the regular season third in the Big 5 Conference behind second-place Del Norte and the league champion Fortuna Huskies, who were rewarded the No. 4 and 3 seeds respectively, as well as first round byes. Eureka finished its regular season in fourth place in the Big 5.

Eureka head coach Alex Skweir said he’s looking for his team to “continue the progress we’ve been making all season,” and for his Loggers to “come out with a lot of energy and make the ball move with purpose.”

Arcata head coach Ty Watkins said he’ll be leaning on his team captains, Jack Taylor and Zack Oakland, his goal keeper Marcus Bensen and his leading goal scorer Arthur Frye (15) to lead his team to a victory tonight.

“Marcus has been great at the net for us all year, and Arthur is our leading goal scorer so he’s always a key for us,” Watkins said. “We’ve been playing a similar style of soccer all season, ball control and smart play, and we’ll look to continue that tonight.”

Should Arcata win tonight, it will face No. 1 International (13-1-1) in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs while Eureka, with a win tonight, would move on to face undefeated No. 2 Fort Bragg (14-0-3).
