Dear Times-Standard readers,

We would like to thank all of the generous organizations and businesses, artists and speakers, and committed individuals who helped make the Sept. 16 memorial for David “Gypsy” Chain in Eureka such a moving occasion. Working together as a community is what we do best in our unique corner of the world, and this remembrance of a young forest defender who died 20 years ago embodies that spirit. Through the event, we also raised a significant portion of the $25,ooo goal to endow an annual scholarship in Gypsy’s memory, through the Humboldt Area Foundation.

Special thanks to organizational supporters and to the organizations that helped make this event possible: organizations EPIC, Humboldt Baykeeper, Friends of the Van Duzen River, Sanctuary Forest, Salmonid Restoration Federation, Northcoast Environmental Center, Trees Foundation, Humboldt Area Foundation; and business supporters Tim and Jennifer Metz, Lauren Sarabia and Comfort of Home staff, Cypress Grove Chevre, Cassaro’s Catering, Tomaso’s, Natural Decadence, Los Bagels, Willow Creek Farms, Trident Lightening Farms, Deep Seeded Farm, Old Town Coffee and Chocolate, Eureka Natural Foods, North Coast Co-op, Wildberries, Henry’s Olives, Ridge Top Gardens, Jason’s sounds, and Brenda Starr.

If community members would like to donate to the scholarship fund, please send donations designated for the ”David ‘Gypsy’ Chain Scholarship” through the Humboldt Area Foundation at, or 363 Indianola Road, Bayside CA 95524.
