MONROVIA, Calif. (AP) _ Staar Surgical Co. (STAA) on Wednesday reported second-quarter net income of $1.8 million, after reporting a loss in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the Monrovia, California-based company said it had net income of 4 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were 9 cents per share.

The maker of implantable lenses posted revenue of $33.9 million in the period.

Staar Surgical shares have more than doubled since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $31.90, nearly tripling in the last 12 months.
