Prospective cannabis business owners in Humboldt County have a local state office where they can pay off their fees and apply for licenses without having to drive all the way to Sacramento.

The state’s Bureau of Cannabis Control announced Thursday that it is opening a temporary location at the Humboldt County Superior Courthouse building in Eureka on July 2.

“The opening of this office allows us to provide greater service to our applicants and licensees in the North Coast Region,” Bureau of Cannabis Control Chief Lori Ajax said in a statement. “And while work remains to be done on our permanent location in Eureka, this is a significant first step.”

The work Ajax is referring to is occurring at the Times-Standard building where the state’s cannabis offices plan to move into the first floor office spaces. The Times-Standard will still be operating in the building, but will move to the second floor. The newspaper will continue to print at the Times-Standard building with no changes planned for the production and distribution departments, which currently occupy the basement and a portion of the first floor.

The temporary courthouse office will house staff from all three of the state’s cannabis management departments: the Bureau of Cannabis Control, the Department of Food and Agriculture and the Department of Public Health.

The Humboldt County Growers Alliance, which represents regulated cannabis businesses, lauded the state’s decision to open a Humboldt County office.

The alliance’s Executive Director Terra Carver said, “We’re thrilled to have them up here and look forward to a long and prosperous relationship.”

Fee payments will require appointments, which can be made by contacting 833-287-8171 or emailing CannabisFeeAppt@dca.ca.gov.

The office hours are as follows:

• Monday: Noon to 5 p.m.

• Tuesday through Thursday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Fridays: 8 a.m. to noon
