LOS ANGELES (AP) — A former Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy has been sentenced to 17 ½ years to life in prison for stabbing his wife to death in their San Fernando home as their three young children slept.

Jorge Casas was sentenced Wednesday for the January 2017 killing of Deseret Favila. Prosecutors say she was stabbed several times in the neck while she lay in the couple’s bed.

Casas pleaded no contest to second-degree murder in April.

Casas served two years as a sheriff’s deputy before resigning for personal reasons in 2006.
