PORTLAND, Ore. — Warriors coach Steve Kerr has often repeated the same message. But he will never be at a loss for words. Not over this issue.

With a gunman killing a reported 17 people at a high school in Parkland, Fla. on Wednesday, Kerr expressed outrage over both another mass shooting and the United States’ inability to stop them from happening.

“Nothing has been done. It doesn’t seem to matter to our government that children are being shot to death day after day in schools,” Kerr said before the Warriors (44-13) played the Portland Trail Blazers (31-26). “It doesn’t matter that people are being shot at a concert and a movie theatre. It’s not enough to apparently move our leadership and our government and the people running this country to actually do anything. That’s demoralizing.”

Kerr has often expressed his views, including President Donald Trump’s divisive rhetoric. But Kerr’s outspokenness toward gun violence traces back to his own upbringing. Kerr’s late father, Malcolm was an American academic who specialized in Middle Eastern affairs before he was assassinated in Beirut in 1984 in an act of terrorism.

“We can do something about it. We can vote people in who actually have the courage to protect people’s lives and not just bow down to the NRA because they finance their campaign for them,” Kerr said. “Hopefully we’ll find enough people, first of all, to vote good people in.”

Kerr then indirectly mentioned studies that show more Americans die from gun-related violence than any other act of crime, including terrorism. Kerr also criticized Trump’s proposal to build a wall along the US-Mexico border to stem illegal immigration.

“Hopefully we find enough people with courage to help our citizens remain safe and focus on the real safety issues,” Kerr said, “and not building some stupid wall for billions of dollars that has nothing to do with our safety and actually protect us from what truly is dangerous, which is maniacs with semi-automatic weapons that are just slaughtering our children. It’s disgusting.”
