The A’s coaching staff is now set for the 2018 season.

The club announced Monday it has hired Al Pedrique to serve as the first base coach on Bob Melvin’s staff.

A former major-league infielder for the New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Detroit Tigers from 1987-89, Pedrique comes to the A’s with plenty of managerial experience. He served as third base coach and interim manager for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2004, third base coach and bench coach for the Houston Astros from 2009-11, and spent the last five seasons managing in the New York Yankees farm system.

Giants fans might remember Pedrique’s stint with Arizona. During a series in which Barry Bonds was approaching his 700th career home run, Pedrique instructed all of his pitchers to intentionally walk Bonds for a majority of a three-game series that season because he did not want Bonds to reach the milestone in Arizona’s ballpark.
