SANTA CLARA — Running back Jeremy McNichols was promoted from the practice squad Wednesday and interior offensive lineman Tim Barnes got re-signed as the 49ers prepare for Sunday’s visit to the Chicago Bears.

Those roster spots opened up as offensive lineman Erik Magnuson (foot) and running back Raheem Mostert (knee) went on the injured-reserve list.

McNichols joins fellow rookie Matt Breida behind starting running back Carlos Hyde. A fifth-round draft pick, McNichols got cut by the Buccaneers on Sept. 2 and joined the 49ers practice sqaud. At Boise State, he averaged 5.6 yards per carry and 19.8 yards per kickoff return, while also totaling 44 rushing touchdowns and 11 receiving touchdowns.

Barnes, a former Rams starting center, couldn’t win a roster spot out of training camp. He’ll join Zane Beadles as backup options to center Daniel Kilgore and guards Laken Tomlinson and Brandon Fusco.

In practice squad moves, linebacker Boseko Lokombo and cornerback Channing Stribling were signed, and defensive lineman Noble Nwachukwu got released.
