3D mammography funded

Eureka >> A press release from St. Joseph Health announced that on Thursday, Oct. 8, the first Spa for a Cure fund raiser was held at the historic Vance Hotel in Old Town, Eureka. The event brought in over $23,000 toward the purchase of a new 3D mammography machine for St. Joseph Health’s Cancer Care Program. The event was sponsored in part by The Spa at Personal Choice and The California Cancer Crusher Team, the press release said.

3D Mammography is a brand new tool in the fight against Breast Cancer, according to the press release. By using digital imaging and 3D graphics, doctors can go beyond the traditional 2D mammogram and find potential tumors that might otherwise have been missed. Additionally, digital imaging allows for mammograms to be sent virtually to specialists around the world, which can help reduce medical costs and bring breast cancer detection and prevention to places where it may otherwise have been unavailable. 3D mammography has been shown to increase breast cancer detection by over 25 percent, and increase invasive breast cancer invasive breast cancer detection by 40 percent, the press release stated. In addition, studies show 3D mammography can help reduce unnecessary callbacks by 20 to 40 percent.
