Eureka >> Low cost firewood vouchers are available for sale to those 55 and above beginning Tuesday, June 16, at the Humboldt Senior Resource Center (HSRC) (located at 1910 California Street in Eureka). Households with an individual who is 55 or older and living on a low to moderate income are eligible to purchase firewood vouchers.

Vouchers can be redeemed for one cord of wood at the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program (SWAP) lot in Eureka. Households may initially purchase up to three cords of wood. After August 1 one can check about the availability of additional wood if needed.

A pick up day will be assigned at the time of purchase or a delivery driver can be assigned for an additional fee. On pick up days SWAP staff and attendees at the lot will direct and load your wood for you. The wood will not be stacked in your vehicle, just deposited loosely. A cord of wood is 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet stacked and smaller trucks may need a couple trips. If one chooses to have a delivery driver, the delivery fee which is based on location is paid to the driver when wood is delivered.

Effort is made to ensure the wood is between 16 and 18 inches long. The type and quality of wood varies, ranging from pine to madrone, to redwood to oak and more. Some of the wood may have been cut months ago; others may have been cut the day before you pick it up. There is no guarantee in the type or quality that one receives. Historically people usually get a mixture. While HSRC does encourage purchase of firewood as soon as possible as the wood is sold on a first come first serve basis, there is enough that sales typically last a while.

Vouchers are sold on a sliding scale costing $78-$121 based upon household size and income. Proof on income and age are required for the 2015 firewood sale. Please bring an identification document such as a driver’s license for proof of age. Additionally, please bring documentation to prove your total household income. Ideally this is a 2014 Tax return, however a Social Security Award letter, two current pay check stubs, a bank statement showing direct deposits of income, or other items to show proof of income will also be accepted. Cash and local checks will be the only accepted form of payment.

Vouchers are available at the Humboldt Senior Resource Center Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. until vouchers are sold out. Sales will also take place at various locations throughout Humboldt County (times, dates, and locations listed below). Please call 443-9747 ext. 1240 with questions.
