Two vandalism suspects were rescued from a cliff at Fort Baker on Thursday after they became stranded while trying to evade arrest, authorities said.

A Golden Gate National Recreation Area official said the two adult males scrambled down a steep cliff near the water”s edge at Battery Yates when they saw rangers approaching.

Rangers, along with Southern Marin Fire Department, CHP helicopter and a Coast Guard boat rescued both men, who are now in custody.

Rangers and a fire rescue team reached the first man using technical rope skills and climbing gear. The second man was lifted to safety by a long-line from the CHP helicopter. Both men are suspected of vandalizing a historic military structure near Fort Baker. That case is still under investigation.

Their names were not released.
