ALAMEDA — Marcus Robertson will return to the Raiders as defensive backs coach, the NFL Network reported Wednesday.

Robertson”s return could clear the way for the return of Charles Woodson, scheduled for unrestricted free agency, who is on record as saying he wasn”t sure he would come back if Robertson wasn”t still on staff.

Woodson wasn”t the only beneficiary of Robertson”s expertise. Strong safety Brandian Ross was one of the Raiders” most improved players and credited Robertson for his progress.

The Raiders have yet to hire a defensive coordinator, with candidates including former Atlanta head coach Mike Smith, former 49ers tight ends coach Eric Mangini and former Bears defensive coordinator Mel Tucker.
