OROVILLE >> An unidentified man died from gunshot wounds Monday morning in a shooting on Highway 70 in Oroville, according to the Butte County Sheriff”s Office.
A second unnamed man was also injured and remains hospitalized, authorities said.
The Sheriff”s Office confirmed the death Monday afternoon and officially connected the two victims to the highway shooting.
Authorities learned of the shooting at around 1:50 a.m. Monday from a report that gunshots were fired into a vehicle on the highway, south of Nelson Avenue.
Deputies responded to the location. As they were investigating the incident, they were notified by Chico Police Department that police were responding to a local hospital for two gunshot victims.
Investigators later determined both incidents were connected, and sheriff”s detectives are now leading the investigation.
Sheriff”s Lt. Al Smith said in a telephone interview later Monday that the deceased and other victim are young Asian men.
One of the young men died of unspecified wounds. The other was wounded in the face and remains hospitalized, Smith said.
So far, investigators haven”t linked Monday”s incident with gunfire exchanged between several people in vehicles Saturday afternoon in north Chico, associated with a Hmong New Year celebration.
“At this point we have no information it”s connected with the Chico shooting,” Smith said.
The lieutenant also would not comment on any of the vehicles involved Monday on the highway, but he did say no one was hurt besides the two young men.
The two victims are not believed to be involved with gangs, authorities said.
Smith said he would not confirm the name or location of the hospital or identify the men for safety reasons. The victims” names and ages are also being withheld.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff”s Office at 538-7671.
Although Oroville California Highway Patrol officers did respond to the shooting, officials there would not comment because the Sheriff”s Office is handling the case.
Chico PD did not return a phone call by deadline.
