MIRANDA >> The South Fork boys soccer team lost both of their games this week. They lost 10-0 at home against Arcata and 5-1 at home against Willits on Friday.
The Cubs have a tough time against the larger schools as they only have one sub. Roberto Navarette played strong in goal in the defeat. “He made some really nice saves and kept us in the game in the first half,” Coach Justin Gyenis said.
The Cubs were in it for the first 30 minutes of the game until the Tigers were able to put three goals in the net in the last 10 minutes of the half and basically put it out of reach headed into the second half. “We worked hard for the whole game,” Coach Gyenis said.
Against Willits the Cubs took an early lead on an Eli Kahan penalty kick. Coach Gyenis said, “Eli Kahan scored a great free kick where he bended up around the wall and into the corner.”
Junior Connor Messenger had a good game for the Cubs. “He played really well,” Coach Gyenis said. “He definitely stepped up his play. He was starting a lot of attacks and putting a lot of through ball passes in behind their defense.”
The depth caught up with the Cubs in the second half who were unable to sub out their players in Saturday’s sweltering heat and they ended up falling to Willits 5-1. “Definitely proud of the effort,” Coach Gyenis said.
The Cubs have two games on the road coming up this week. They travel to McKinleyville on Wednesday at 5:00 and travel to Eureka on Saturday at 1:00.
