About 6,000 catfish were planted Friday in Horseshoe Lake in upper Bidwell Park for today”s Hooked on Fishing, not on Drugs event.
It”s the 25th year for the annual free event, which is open to kids 15 and younger.
There”s a special tank for youg anglers 1-5 years old.
It runs 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Loaner rods are available, but people are welcome to bring their own, with the proviso that lead sinkers are not allowed in Bidwell Park.
Each young angler is allowed to keep one fish, and the Chico Rotary Club will be on hand to clean them.
The goal is to not impact the lake”s resident population of largemouth bass, bullhead and carp, and anyone releasing such a fish after catching it will be given a new Shakespeare rod and reel courtesy of the Chico Bass Club.
