Cal Fire-Butte County firefighters were able to quickly douse three roadside fires that burned six acres along Neal Road near the landfill Friday morning.
Division chief David Hawks said the largest of the three fires was about 2.5 acres in size. The fires started at about 11:10 a.m.
“We have no idea how the fire started,” he said. “But we started the investigation.”
Seven engines and a hand crew fought the fire. It didn”t threaten the dump or any homes and all of the aircraft dispatched to the scene were released “fully loaded,” according to Hawks. Even the lone bulldozer went unused.
Hawks said the fire did reach the rim of the canyon and forced one lane of traffic to be closed. Fire crews were on hand until mid-afternoon Friday and are expected to check on the fire Saturday to ensure there are no flare-ups.
